£16 could pay for a Macmillan Information and Support Assistant for an hour. They could answer a person’s burning question about losing their hair and offer reassurance that they don’t have to wear a wig if they don’t want to, give someone a cup of tea and the chance to say ‘I’m scared’, provide booklets on getting help with mounting bills and refer someone for counselling.
"I walked in there to get a booklet and just started crying saying I can't do this anymore. The staff sat me down, made me a nice cup of tea and we had a long chat. I felt a lot better afterwards." Sharon, diagnosed with stage 3 malignant melanoma |
